The Last Night at Musi-Cafe

"The Last Night at Musi-Caf"
written by Bill Kurzenberger

In the hills of Qubec near the border with Maine lies the town of Lac-Mgantic.
At the Musi-Caf
they would gather at night, it was festive and trs romantic.

The troubadours played while the townspeople sang and danced their worries away.
No one knew that day it would be all washed away, on the last night at Musi-Caf
.

Refrain: Farewell our friends, until we meet again.
This wasn't the way it was supposed to end.

On that fateful day, seven miles away, a freight train came loose from its brake.
It started to roll, picking up speed as it barreled toward the town by the lake.

The train's engineer wasn't anywhere near, and there was no one to slow its descent.
It rolled down the hill at gravity's will, a ghost train from hell's bent.

The train sped into town, no lights but the rumbling announced its arrival that night.
When it reached the bend, it crashed through the cafe and exploded in a terrible fright.

Bridge: Mon ami, mon ami, why did you have to leave?
Ma cherie, ma cherie, why couldn't it have been me?
(Solo)

Refrain: Farewell our friends, until we meet again.
This wasn't the way it was supposed to end.

It took several days to extinguish the blaze, and to count those who didn't survive.
The accident stole forty-seven souls from the cafe and houses nearby.

The cafe's been rebuilt, with survivors' guilt of the heavy price paid that day.
And each time the train rolls into town, you can still hear them sing and play...
At the new Musi-Caf
.
